High School Portfolio Builder 101 (and College Prep)

A college-level portfolio is within reach: Creating a diverse and effective visual art portfolio is fun and serious business. The average high school portfolio needs to be supplemented and enhanced to be ready for presentation to colleges.

THIS IS AN 8-SESSION IN-PERSON COURSE. Access to an online forum is included for homework submissions.

Students will learn through drawing, simple practices that will be adaptable to assignments as well as personal work. Each student’s work will be assessed individually, and assignments will be designed to balance the portfolio. Group time will focus on drawing practices that enhance perception and knowledge and critique intended to strengthen a student’s ability to speak about their work.

In addition to class time – students will have access to a private online class forum on our website to share homework and receive critiques from our instructor.

Stephen Gaffney has been teaching drawing, color, and composition at the School of Visual Arts to Pre-college, Continuing Education, BFA Graphic Design, Illustration Cartooning, Animation and Fine Arts students for over 32 years.

**Please note**: it is okay if you can not make every live session. We will share the homework with you for posting online. In-person lessons begin 15 minutes after class start time in case of student lateness.

Required Materials: Large drawing pad. medium vine charcoal, 2b drawing pencils, pack of colored pencils, kneaded eraser.

We are a screen-free environment! Students are expected to focus on their work for the duration of the session. We play low classical music during class. Discussions of student work with the teacher take place during class. Gender-neutral restrooms are located near our room.
Our room has a security camera for everyone’s safety.
